Interim studies. During the data analysis phase of SCAPIS, some research projects were defined and performed on interim material (n≈15,000). The interim research questions were defined by the SCAPIS Steering Committee. One of the main purposes of the interim studies were to gain knowledge on data quality and handling.
SCAPIS, Douglas continued, is testing a tiered testing proposal that predicts risk by a definition of anatomic risk based on the presence of any coronary disease in four or more segments. “The rationale for choosing this cut point is unclear as clinical risk/mortality is higher in all nonobstructive CAD than no CAD, starting at one vessel involvement,” she explained. SCAPIS, Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study, is a population study around cardiovascular, epidemic and genetic research, initiated by Swedish researchers in 2007. A pilot study was conducted in 2012 to ensure that the population study was possible to implement, and in 2014, the major SCAPIS study was initiated.
The study is planned to take place at six of Sweden’s largest hospitals during 2013-2016 and is an initiative of the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation.
Region Uppsala and Uppsala University funded parts of this data collection. SCAPIS is a national project in Sweden and stands for Swedish CardioPulmonary bioImage Study. The objective of SCAPIS is to find biomarkers in order to improve the risk prediction and lower the death rate of Cardiovascular disease (CVD).

"The SCAPIS study has already yielded novel data on the prevalence of coronary artery disease in the general population, and will address many critical questions over the long term," she said. In 2015, a follow-up project SCAPIS – SciLifeLab Wellness Profiling was initiated with funding from KCAP to allow continuous monitoring of biomarkers after the initial base-line examination for a subset of the individuals recruited to the large SCAPIS study.

SCAPIS is designed as a prospective observational study of a randomly selected sample from the general population. The examinations were selected on the basis of their ability to provide detailed phenotypic information on subclinical disease whilst at the same time being applicable for use in a large study population.
